Hi! I'm back again for my third posting about certain animals and their behaviour.I hope that I will be able to piece together a few facts about animals(which I hope to be interesting)that will be satisfactory and will help all of us to further understand them.Well, anyway, I hope you will enjoy this posting !
Animals with amazing senses
Many animals have amazing senses, as a result, I will not be able to list all of them but only a few selected ones. The eagle, for example, has an eye ball of 35mm in length and an amazing sense of sight, as its vision is between 2-3.6 times better than humans, depending on the species.Elephants, which have an incredible sense of hearing in some aspects, can hear the very low frequency sounds which are in the infra sound range as they have a hearing range of between 1-20 000Hz which is lower than a human can hear.
The catfish has 100 000 taste buds which means that it has 'good taste' as compared to a human's 10 000 taste buds. The star-nosed mole has excellent touch as it has 100 000 touch receptors from its star to its brain which is almost 6 times that of a human's.
Animal camouflage
A few animals have incredible ways of camouflaging themselves. Some, like the puffer fish and porcupine fish, have the ability to swell up into a ball a few times their normal size when they sense danger to discourage predators from trying to eat them. The stone fish camouflages itself by lying very still on the sea bed and as it looks very much like the sea bed, unsuspecting prey do not notice it until it poisons them with its deadly poison when they swim or crawl over it.Of all these animals, I think that the most awesome is the mimic octopus as it can mimic the forms of many sea creatures such as sea snakes, jellyfish, lion fish, poisonous sole, and sea anemones. It is so hard to recognise as it is almost always in disguise that there is only one captured specimen which is in the Toledo zoo in Ohio.
Mimicry
Mimicry is considered an anti-predator action as it allows animals to disguise themselves as another more dangerous species( the model) to ward off predators. For example, the lizard will mimic a tree trunk colour and rest on a tree to deceive predators into thinking that it is just a tree. However, some like the praying mantis use mimicry differently by imitating flowers to attract prey.Altogether, mimicry is a useful tool as it helps animals to survive.
Recently( 1950-1999)extinct animals
Sadly since humans started having greater advancements in science and technology, a number of animals have declined drastically and finally became extinct.A few examples are the New Zealand Greater Short-tailed bat(1988), Japanese sealion(1950s) and the Pig- Footed bandicoot(1950s).
